The aim of the project is to facilitate the recovery and regeneration of the damaged mangrove areas of 51 barangays in Eastern Samar in the municipalities of Guiuan, Mercedes, Salcedo, Quinapondan, Giporlos, Balangiga and Lawaan by removing the debris in the mangrove area. Not only does fish depend on the existence of the mangrove forests, GDFI also wants to provide financial support for fishers in the hard times after typhoon Yolanda through the cash-for-work program.

GDFI is responsible for monitoring the clean-up of the mangrove areas in the different barangays. Now the third and last phase of the project has begun with only ten barangays left to be cleaned up. Right now workers are involved with the clean-up of the mangroves in Cabunga-an in Mercedes, Sto.Nino in Quinapondan, Cansumangkay and San Miguel in Balangiga, and Caridad, Abejao, Seguinon, Bagtong, Brgy. 13, and Matarinao in Salcedo.
