mangrove cleaning

The initial (clearing/cleaning) mangrove forest rehabilitation efforts lasted for 4 months, which officially started last March 26, 2014 and ended last July 25, 2014. The project managed to cover 51 barangays from 7 municipalities (Guiuan, Mercedes, Salcedo, Quinapondan, Giporlos, Balangiga, Lawaan) across eastern samar. A total of 1,639 families were direct beneficiaries, 1,626 of it were participants of the cash for work component and 13 were deserving recipients of unconditional cash grants because of physical limitations, ex. old age and illness. 25 Fiber glass paddle boats and 50 fiber glass paddles were also distributed to these municipalities to assist their MPA’s (Marine Protected Sanctuaries) operation/protection.

Mangrove areas are important habitats of marine organisms, which is basically are the primary source of income for the coastal communities. The project will help the fisherfolk rebuild their lives and livelihood. Moreover, their participation in the mangrove greenworks will somehow raise their awareness on the importance of these ecosystems and hopefully will motivate them to preserve and protect the mangroves to sustain their livelihood, not only for their own benefit but also for their children’s future.
